Typing skill is critical!!!
We live in a world that the technologies are constantly evolving. Typing nowadays became an undeniable mode of communication for our children and most of us! My daughter constantly types through Google Hangout to message me while zooming into her classes.
Often, it is "Mommy, I am hungry💜"
I spent the last 2 hours sitting in front of the computer to write a piece for my blog. That's how we communicate with the people (world) now.
For students with limited vocal speech, I always schedule some portion of his/her day to practice typing. They may be PECS users- also uses vocal speech to meet his basic needs, such as "I want a bathroom". I am not speech pathologies but, I observe how severe apraxia negatively impacts his ability to produce sounds, words, and sentences.
In a daily typing time, we may start with 10-20 Flashcards, and eventually move onto the phrase/sentences. Simply typing from the visual model (the words) is a great way for him to work on tracking the sequence of letters visually. We are not so far advanced in this process- just starting typing words on the keyboard, but someday we hope that we land somewhere good.
Teaching and learning every day with your best effort will only help us get there!
